  • The Ansel Adams Wilderness hugs Yosemite National Park to the Southeast. It's a backpackers paradise, dotted with alpine lakes, great trail access (it hosts both the PCT and The JMT for a while) and austere off-trail options. Mount Ritter and Mount Banner are almost always visible in this wilderness and are popular targets for alpine climbers. I crafted this shot early on the last morning of a backpack trip. The brilliance of sunrise had passed, and the light was turning from oranges and purples to crisp blue and gold. I had geared up to head out, thoughts on flip-flops and a cheeseburger, intent on charging the miles back to the trailhead. As I walked around the lake I found myself stopping constantly to eye the foreground, and the interplay of the reflection with it.

  • I love it when a plan comes together. I was introduced to this cold spring by a local friend on a hot summer afternoon. It's a magical place, little known in a time when every spring in the Eastern Sierra has become public knowledge. I planned to return for sunset that evening. The summer monsoon clouds were set up perfectly across the valley, framing the High Sierra landmarks (Ritter, Banner, Minarets). I composed the shot while waist deep in the spring, and watched the amazing light show while tiny trout swam around my feet.

  • Crisp fall mornings in the Eastern Sierra can't be beaten. Fellow photographer Diego Panasiti and I were stoked to drive down to the High Sierra in the fall of 2015 for one last shot at fall colors. The alarm went off early at the lodge, and we rolled up canyon to shoot the dissipating inversion at sunrise. As we walked up to the ridge we were passed by a very professional looking photographer heading back down. All he said to us was "Ya missed it!" I have no idea what he meant by that, as the sun hadn't yet risen. Still, he gave up the spot I wanted, and we took in an epic Sierra sunrise through the fog.

  • After a long approach day into Kings Canyon National Park, my colleague and I tramped back up to the lip of Kearsarge Pass to take in the sunset above the Pinnacles. We were rewarded with an amazing vantage point, and shifting, tonal colors.

  • McGee Creek is a favorite shooting location of mine. As a Truckee, California local, it's great to head down to the High Sierra and to access a different type of mountain environment. This canyon has great access and diverse subjects, as well as being my home base in the Sierra. A prime spot for peak fall colors, I hit the canyon up every year. I framed several shots in the canyon on this morning, focusing on sweeping landscapes, rather than intimate details or the flow of McGee Creek. This one ended up being my favorite; I love the forms of the various subjects, and the in sync line and color of foreground and background.

  • Summer sunsets at Mono Lake can be mind-blowing. With the monsoons the drive-up access and the well known nature of the lake comes combat photography conditions. On nights like this, visitors swarm through the Tufa, taking it all in. In general they respect the fragile nature of the landscape, treading carefully as they explore this foreign scene, taken by the foreignness of it all. The Tufa make for interesting subjects, all the more so in the contradiction. As we seek to photograph something so wild and indicative of geologic history, we should also bear in mind that these features were under water not so many years ago, before the inflows to Mono Lake became diverted for the growing water needs of Los Angeles.
